Old-time herbal beauty tips are actually a trend nowadays. More and more people are interested in the natural side of beauty and care for different reasons.

And when it comes to wrinkles, most women would try endless products and treatments to keep their skin tight.

But what if these treatments are costly for some of us? Or too harsh?

Of course, rather than spending vast amounts of money on promising beauty creams, we can rely on our ancestors’ innate cosmetic knowledge. Nature provides us with medicinal plants that not only prevent wrinkles but can also iron out existing furrows.

For a while, the cosmetics industry advertises expensive anti-wrinkle creams and exotic ingredients, to which problematic additives such as paraffin, parabens, silicones, hormones, and preservatives are often added.

At the same time, skin-friendly herbs, whose natural powers our ancestors already used for beauty care, wait along the roadside, in the forest, and our gardens.

So, if you have decided to start an anti-aging routine based on natural herbs, you must read what’s next.

Naturally, aging cannot be stopped

Yet, with a healthy anti-wrinkle diet rich in cell-protecting antioxidants, pro-vitamins, trace elements (selenium & silicic acid), and coenzyme Q10, you can effectively arm your skin against free radicals and stimulate the production of collagen.

Also, with sufficient water absorption, the cells remain well hydrated and create the basis for an even complexion.

As a third anti-aging component, natural cosmetics and naturopathically prepared medicinal plants can help to resist skin aging.

Medicinal plants with anti-aging effects against wrinkles

In contrast to cosmetic surgery, which uses nerve toxins as wrinkle killers to combat skin aging, naturopathy’s anti-aging concept relies on various medicinal plants’ interaction.

Infusions, juices, and compresses are easier to prepare and also effective against wrinkles.

After proper research, we’ve come to the conclusion that these five are the most skin-friendly plants that can be used for anti-aging purposes.

Plant field horsetail for anti-aging

1

Plant field horsetail

The field horsetail from is considered a persistent weed. Natural medicine, in turn, appreciates the high content of silicic acid in this plant, which benefits our connective tissue. This is because sagging skin can be the result of a lack of silicic acid.

Therefore, make sure that you absorb enough silicic acid that actively works against skin aging.

For cosmetic and homeopathic purposes, the field horsetail’s green summer shoots are used, which can be collected between May and July in fields, meadows, acres, and along roadsides.

In addition to silicic acid, they contain saponins, flavones, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and other trace elements, strengthening the hair structure, bones, nails, and teeth.

Field horsetail tea

For internal use to strengthen the connective tissue, horsetail is primarily prepared as a tea. Boil half a liter of water, add eight heaped teaspoons of cut horsetail.

Boil the tea so that the silicic acid is released from the plant parts and leave to infuse for 30 minutes. The recommended cure is 3 cups of horsetail tea daily for 4 to 6 weeks.

Field horsetail compress

For external use, you can dip compresses in horsetail tea and place them on the corresponding areas of skin.

Caution: Field horsetail contains contraction stimulating substances and should not be confused with the poisonous marsh horsetail!

Get rid of wrinkles with lady’s mantle

The lady’s mantle from the rose family, as its name suggests, has proven itself mainly in gynecology (menopausal symptoms, menstrual pain), and it’s known as a powerful antioxidant.

But is the flowering herb, which can be collected between May and September, that is good for wrinkles. Its healing power is particularly attributed to the tannins, bitter substances, and flavonoids it contains.

Afterward, the tea should be strained. Drink the tea in small sips.

Anti-wrinkle effect of rosemary

Rosemary is a popular spice in Mediterranean cuisine. However, few people know about the medicinal powers of this plant from the labiate family.

A study published in the European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Science measured the rosemary’s antioxidant activity, concluding that that rosemary extract has a high antioxidant capacity of 71.17% compared to the ascorbic acid, which was 93.58%.

Specially used as a medicinal plant, rosemary has antiseptic, gall-busting, diuretic, antispasmodic, stimulating, and wound healing properties. For skincare, rosemary is particularly used as a firming tonic.

In April and May, rosemary leaves and flowers can be collected and prepared for naturopathic purposes. As for detoxifying, blood circulation-promoting, and tightening agents, the bitter substances, tannins, flavones, and camphor contained in it are particularly active.

Caution: The essential oil extracted from the leaves and stems should only be used externally because of its stomach-irritating effect.

Rosemary compress against wrinkles

You can use rosemary in the form of compresses to prevent wrinkles. For the infusion, put 50g of flowers and leaves into 1 liter of boiling water and leave to infuse 10 to 15 minutes after boiling.

Then filter the rosemary infusion and soak a compress in the decoction. Apply twice a day to the appropriate areas of skin, keeping away the wrinkles.

Chervil from the umbellifer family is one of the outstanding fines herbes of French cuisine. Its wild form grows in Southern Europe, but can also be grown in the garden.

Soak a compress in the cooled tea and dab the respective skin areas. Compresses made from freshly pressed chervil juice are even more effective for aging skin.

Dandelion anti-wrinkle agent

Dandelion as an anti-wrinkle agent

Dandelion extracts have long been used for traditional Chinese medicine and Native American medicine to treat cancers, hepatitis, and digestive diseases; however, less is known on the effects of dandelion extracts in skin photo-aging. Dandelion leaf and flower extract significantly protect UVB irradiation-inhibited cell viability.

The dandelion belongs to the daisy family and, with its yellow blossoms, sets pretty accents on the spring meadows.

Anything but a weed, its leaves can be used to make delicious, tangy wild herb salads. The positive effect of dandelion on our skin can be explained by its high content of vitamins A, B, and C and the trace elements copper and zinc, which are very important for healthy skin.

In addition, the medicinal plant’s bitter substances contribute to the liver’s detoxification, which in turn is noticeable in a fresh complexion.

Dandelion juice against wrinkles

According to studies carried out by the University Skin Clinic in Mannheim, dandelion juice is effective against dry skin as well as against wrinkles formation.

In female test subjects who drank dandelion juice daily for a month, a significant improvement in skin elasticity and moisture was shown.

According to the scientists, even the daily consumption of 20ml of this medicinal plant juice leads to a visible improvement in the skin’s appearance.

Although dandelion juice is available in health food stores, freshly pressed dandelion juice is probably even more effective and can be combined with other vegetables for a better taste.

Summary

These being said, we don’t always need to spend fortunes on anti-aging treatments. As long as Mother Nature offers us many herbs and plants that provide antioxidant activity and vitamins, you can use those instead of products that may contain harsh chemicals.
